Shifting the Industry's Trajectory
In the last decade, approximately 75% of specialty and emergency veterinary hospitals have been acquired by for-profit corporations. This shift has drastically increased patient costs and decreased veterinarian job satisfaction.
For-profit operations often prioritize financial gains over quality animal care, leading to inflated prices and limited-service availability. Consequently, pet owners may face the heartbreaking decision of "economic euthanasia" if they cannot afford necessary treatments. Moreover, veterinarians in these settings are frequently required to generate four to five times their salary, adversely affecting the quality of patient care and leading to high rates of depression, compassion fatigue, and burnout among practitioners.
By embracing a non-profit model, we aim to revolutionize the industry, prioritizing the well-being of animals and their caregivers over profit. This approach not only ensures more equitable access to essential veterinary services but also fosters a healthier, more sustainable work environment for veterinarians.
